Pit Orchestra Tips

2019 Musical: And the World Goes Round

Unfortunately, there are no string parts for this years musical.

  1. Practice at home and come prepared to all rehearsals
  2. Become familiar with the show; listen to recordings
  3. Come prepared to all rehearsals (music, pencil, mutes, tuner etc.)
  4. Mark all cuts and personal reminders clearly with pencil - Post-it notes are easy to see and don't need to be earased at the end.
  5. Always play with confidence, as if you are a soloist
  6. Bring a notebook to rehearsals to make a list of tough spots of practice later
  7. Be aware of what is happening on stage
  • Be certain you are not drowning out vocalists
  • Play out strong for Overture, Ballets, Scene Changes & Dance Breaks
  • All underscoring (music under dialogue) should be soft and ambient
  • Write cue lines in your music to ensure you are ready to play.
  1. Stay alert: watch the conductor and be ready for anything (this is live theatre)
  2. Always listen and adjust in order to stay in tune and create a balanced ensemble
  • Listen down (and to the professional guests in the orchestra)
  • Remember the pyramid of sound
  1. Avoid bringing attention to yourself
  • Wear all black for performances
  • Never be seen on stage
  • Stay away from all costumes and props
  • Unpakc you instrment in another room (the pit can get cramped)
  1. Take care of your music and be sure to return it (fully erased) at the end of the run

**Keep a list of places that you want extra help with (rhythm, fingering, intonation, etc.) and bring it to lessons so we can work one on one.
