5th Grade

2/26/13
We have been learning an African American Spiritual called Follow the Drinking Gourd which has taught us a lot about slavery and coded songs which helped slaves escape their owners.  We learned the song, and added an accompaniment part on xylophone.

2/8/13
Our 5th graders have been finishing up an Orff instrument unit.  We have played many different genre's of music including Pop.  We really enjoyed playing an ostinato with Taio Cruz's Dynaminte.

12/4/12
We have been exploring different listening skills and will be starting a listening journal.

10/10/12
Our students have been writing the ending to a Mexican Folk Tale.  This is Hispanic Heritage Month so we talked about Mariachi music and Mexican folk tales.  The students discussed how different music can make us feel differently.  They used the feeling that a piece of music gave them to finish a folk tale.  They have been reading them to the class and I have really enjoyed their creative endings.

9/7/12
We just created "Musical Me" diagrams.  Using a web format we shared what we like about different parts of music.  We shared such things as our favorite instruments, favorite bands, and instruments we would like to learn how to play.
