Cortland JSHS Library Information

Purpose

The library is a quiet study area.  Students are welcome for research, class assignments, pleasure reading and computer use.  The library is open from 7:25 AM to 3:25 PM. Students may come to the library from study hall and lunch.  Once signed into the library, students assume certain obligations and responsibilities for their own behavior.  The following will be enforced for the library and for computer labs.

Library Conduct and Disciplinary Procedures

  • Inappropriate behavior (i.e. talking except for brief assignment-related whispering, wandering, distracting other patrons, listening to music, text messaging, and being disrespectful) will result in a warning to the student.  If the inappropriate behavior continues, the student will be given a pass back to study hall or lunch and will not be allowed into the library for 5 school days.

  • The second time a student is asked to leave the library, s/he may not return for 15 school days.  In addition, a letter will be sent home.

  • The third time a student is asked to leave the library, s/he will not be allowed to return for 30 school days, and a referral will be sent to the principal.  When the student returns, s/he will conference with the librarian and sign a behavioral contract.  If the student breaks or refuses to sign the contract, s/he will not be permitted in the library from study hall or lunch for the remainder of the school year.

Signing Out to the Library

From Study Halls

  • Students who wish to go to the library must report to study hall first.

  • The student will legibly sign the library sheet which will serve as a group pass to the library from that study hall.

  • There will be spaces on the senior high library sheet for 7 students and on the junior high sheets for 5 students.  If a study hall teacher has an especially large study hall, they will contact Mrs. Buerkle to see if we can arrange for a slightly larger number of students

  • Students who need to use the library and have a pre-signed pass from the teacher of their assignment will always be allowed in and will be given priority for computers, etc.

  • Each study hall teacher will also have two 10-minute passes that can be given to students who want to select a book and return to study hall. ONE student per pass.

  • Study hall students must wait until everyone from their study hall who intends to go to the library that day has signed the sheet before they leave for the library.  Students from the same study hall will all travel to the library together with the library sheet.

  • Students go directly to the library from study hall and should not stop at their lockers, lavatory, or any other location on the way.  After signing into the library, passes may be issued by library staff members for these purposes.

From Lunch

  • Students coming to the library from lunch must have a pass signed by a teacher for whom they have work or by a member of the library staff. Students must get their passes signed in the library before school or after school for the following day.  Students with a pre-signed pass from a teacher to do work during lunch may also come in.

Signing Into the Library

  • On arrival study hall students sign in at the circulation desk using their student ID card to be scanned into the library attendance list.  Students who repeatedly forget their ID cards will be sent back to study hall.

  • There will be a separate sign-in list at the circulation desk for 10 minute passes.

Library Seating

  • In order to provide a comfortable learning environment, students may sit with no more than two to a table
  • Students may be asked to sit in a specific section of the Library for ease of supervision.
  • Students should request the use of the cooperative table if they need to work together.
  • When available, the conference room may be used for group work with permission from the Library staff.
  • If there is limited seating due to class use of the library, library staff may have to restrict the number of students for that period.
  • Students with pre-signed passes from teachers will be given priority to sign in when seating is limited.

Borrowing LIBRARY Materials

  • Students must use their ID cards when signing out library materials.

  • The normal loan period for students is 15 school days.

  • Reference materials may be signed out overnight, but they must be returned before first period the next day so that all patrons will have access to them as needed.

  • Students who have overdue materials may lose their library privileges; lost, stolen, or damaged materials must be paid for by the borrower.

  • Patrons may read current periodicals in the library.  Older periodicals may be checked out.

  • Printer use is for school work only.

Computer Use

Computers in the library are for academic use only and must conform to the guidelines of the district’s Acceptable Use Policy.

Students should be aware that all files, folders, and accounts are the property of the CCSD.  Inappropriate use of computers will result in loss of access and possible disciplinary action.
