ABOUT

The Cortland String Program is focused on creating safe, fun, and engaging opportunities for students in grades 3-12 to play music, explore the role music plays in their life, engage with peers, and provide an escape from the stresses of everyday life.  Students in the string program have opportunities to play in large and small ensembles, and individually.  They may also participate in extra curricular activities both in and out of school.

Chamber Orchestra - For students in grades 9-12. Daily rehearsals provide students with large group instruction for the intermediate to advanced musician and time to foster relationships with peers.  Individual and small group lessons allow students individualized instruction and a safe place to explore taking ownership of their learning and needs.

String Orchestra - For students in grades 7-8.  Every-other day rehearsals provide students with large group instruction for the beginner to intermediate musician and time to foster relationships with peers in a fun and engaging way.  Individual and small group lessons allow students individualized instruction and a safe place to explore taking ownership of their learning and needs.

String Lab - For students in grades 7-12.  Every-other day rehearsals provide students with basic skills and musical concepts for the beginner musician.  Students work in both a large and small group setting while learning an instrument of their choice.  Students explore music at a pace that is comfortable for them with opportunities to advance into String or Chamber Orchestra when they are ready.

Instrumental Lessons - Individual and small group lessons for students in grades 7-12.

Randall After School Strings - For students in grades 5-12.  Weekly rehearsals allow students to build relationships with peers of various ages while playing music together in a fun and relaxed environment.

Randall Middle School Orchestra (Grades 5th & 6th)

Instrumental Lessons - Instrumental lessons are either individual or small group lessons held once a 6 day cycle for 20 minutes. Lessons rotate so the students will not miss the same class twice.

Randall After School String - This is a new, exciting offering! Ms. Miller works with the Randall 5th & 6th Grades after school to continue orchestra skills in this fun and creative ensemble. This group meets after school once a week.

Randall 5th & 6th Grade Orchestra - In Middle School Orchestra, we guide the students through continued work on proper instrument position, proper bow hold, and note reading skills. We work together to gain confidence with scales and orchestra repertoire, following the conductor, and creating music together. These orchestra rehearsals meet twice a cycle for a dedicated class period within the school day schedule. We typically perform for both the Randall Winter and Spring Concerts.

Smith Intermediate School (Grades 3rd & 4th)

Recruitment and Sign Ups - Smith 3rd graders begin the recruitment process by first learning about the instrument families in general music. We hold an assembly within the school day for the 3rd graders, and then send home recruitment information and sign up sheets. All 3rd graders are encouraged to sign up! Band and Orchestra are offered at the same time, and students may sign up for their instrument choices. Band and Orchestra teachers work with the students in the spring to try them out and find the best fit. Third graders will begin lessons and work in the late spring for approximately 6-8 weeks. Our hope is they continue in 4th grade on the same instrument. Summer lessons are offered but not required, depending on availability.

Instrumental Lessons - Instrumental lessons are either individual or small group lessons held once a 6 day cycle for 20 minutes. Lessons rotate so the students will not miss the same class twice.

Smith 4th Grade Orchestra - In 4th Grade Orchestra, we guide the students through all basic beginner skills including proper instrument position, proper bow hold, and note reading skills. We work together to gain confidence with scales and orchestra repertoire, following the conductor, and creating music together. These orchestra rehearsals meet twice a cycle in the morning time. We typically perform for both the Smith Winter and Smith Spring Concerts.

Smith After School FIddle Ensemble - This elementary fiddle group works on the basic note reading skills and beginning fiddle and folk tunes. We also work on movement and include other musical skills like percussion and improvisation. We are so fortunate to have this extra contact opportunity for our students!
