United Way Day of Caring 9/25/2019
During the month of September, students at Smith Intermediate School brought in non-perishable food items for the
annual United Way Day of Caring, which was held on September 25, 2019.
Melissa Holl’s third grade class was the leader of the campaign at Smith Intermediate School. Melissa’s students talked to the entire student body in an all school morning meeting and encouraged students to bring food in. With their encouragement, many students brought in food items. Melissa said, “I feel the United Way Day of Caring helps the students realize the importance of the #OtherPeopleMatter. This year during our study of the Positivity Project, we have focused on learning about what #OtherPeopleMatter means. They have learned how to put others first, speak in front of others, and come together for a cause that matters. The students are so excited that we exceeded their school wide goal of collecting over 200 items! My class also helped unload and sort the items in Beaudry Park. The children’s excitement is amazing and we love participating in this campaign each year.”
Izaebella Farley, a third grade student in Mrs. Holl’s class said, “I wanted to do this because I think it is important to help other people that do not have enough food. I brought in canned food to donate and am glad we reached our school goal! Mrs. Holl is really caring of other people and she wants us to make sure we think of others.”
Students spent the day sorting food at Beaudry Park which was a monumental task considering the number of items that needed to be organized. Tables of pasta, condiments, baby products, breakfast items were overflowing with goods! Students ended the day with some well-deserved time to play on the playground. Students were happy to help and had a fun-filled day.
In addition to students food donations, staff can submit monetary donations through payroll deductions to the United Way. The United Way Day of Caring was September 25, 2019. To make a donation visit this website. This video helps capture some of the excitement of the day.
