CHS Celebrates International Week
The mission of the International Club at Cortland High School is to enhance cultural awareness, support student learning of foreign languages, and to encourage students to become more aware of the global community. Toward that mission, the International Club has put together a celebration of National Foreign Language week from April 1st to April 5th.
The planning for this event started several weeks ago, with surveys being sent out to staff. The International Club then created door labels which have the teachers name, room number and primary subjects taught written on it in Spanish, French and also Portuguese. Additionally, teachers that provided their family's nationality/ancestry on the survey, have a name tag with flags from their family's nationality prior to arriving to the United States. The purpose of the name tags is to demonstrate how uniquely diverse the staff is within Cortland High School.
This year the club will hold grade level Olympics which will take place at the high school throughout the week. Students will have the opportunity to test their knowledge of trivia, culture and music from around the world. The grade level with the highest score by the end of the week will get a mini golden globe trophy that they may keep until the next round of grade level Olympics the following year. Participation in the trivia competitions will be on the students own time and will be conducted through Google Forms. A QR code to allow quick access to the trivia competition will be posted outside of my room and the rooms of all the foreign language teachers.
Advisor Keith Plam said, “each morning there will be a trivia question on the announcements for the students. There will be one lucky winner from each grade level that will be picked at random. I also invite the staff to participate in this challenge. One member of the staff that answers the trivia question correctly will be picked at random daily.”
The theme for this year's National Foreign Language Week is: Languages Are The Key To The World. Here is the official website regarding the week. (please note due to snow days, we are scheduling this a month later). Here is the original decree by the Governor regarding the week,if you are curious or wish to use it within your own classroom.
