Summer Reading Information

Summertime is a fun time for readers of all ages! Research has shown that children who spend time reading during the summer months not only avoid the “summer slide” in learning, but also score higher on reading achievement tests than those who do not participate.
Annette Herbert, Library Media Specialist said, “The effect of the “summer slide” is staggering. Kids who lose reading skills over the summer will end up two years behind their reading peers by the end of sixth grade. There are many opportunities to prevent that “slide” that are easily accessible to your children. ”
We have a wonderful public library right here in Cortland. They have a summer reading program that is fun, informative, and relaxing. The theme for this year’s program is “Libraries Rock.” Last year, our Cortland students logged over 173,000 reading minutes. By getting your child(ren) involved in the program, we can easily see that number increase this year! Click here for more information.
In addition, if your child enjoys reading e-books, we have collections that are accessible from your home device. Just go to your child’s school web page at (or Barry, Parker, Randall, Virgil) and click on the SYMBALOO link.  From there, you can choose, both, fiction and nonfiction resources! Here are just a few:
  • TUMBLE BOOKS: There are many books in this collection along with activities that help with comprehension including games and puzzles that are related to the books. Your child’s librarian has the username and password to access this database.
  • OVERDRIVE: Use your student’s ID number for the username and password. Once your student finds a book that he/she is interested in reading, click the book and it goes into your book bag. It can be downloaded from there.
  • MyON: Use your student’s ID number for the username and password. This database tracks your student’s reading and periodically gives a reading assessment to show his/her growth across time. Many of the students have tried out MyON here at school. I hope you will encourage them to continue to read from this valuable resource.
For a list of titles perfect for summer reading, click here. These are recent publications that students will love. Stop into the local library and check out a few and see where your reading takes you this summer! The teachers and librarians can’t wait to hear about all of the adventures our students will take through books this summer!!
Have a wonderful, restful summer and be sure to take some time to read!
