Dynamic Paws Performs at Naturalization Ceremony

Dynamic Paws Singing Group

For decades, acapella was a tradition that thrived mainly at Ivy League colleges and small liberal arts schools. But acapella is enjoying an explosion on all campuses both college and high schools, with new groups popping up every year and being noticed in popular culture.

Cortland Senior High School is no exception to this trend. We have our own group: Cortland Dynamic Paws. Mr. Wells, Senior High School Music teacher, advises the group. He selects the music and oversees the rehearsals. Like many colleges, there is an audition process for students who want to join the group. Mr. Wells, a Cortland native, is actively involved in the Cortland music community. He not only does the Dynamic Paws group, but overseas both the Senior High and Junior High musical. He also is a member of the Cortland Summer Youth Bureau theater.

One special experience that the Dynamic Paws group got to participate in was a performance at the Naturalization Ceremony at the Cortland County Courthouse on April 10th. Mr. Wells said,  “it is a great way for us to bring music into our community. We performed songs such as America the Beautiful, the Star Spangled Banner and Take Me Out to the Ball Game.”

Freshman Katie Phetteplace is a member of the Dynamic Paws group. “I really enjoyed getting to perform at the Naturalization Ceremony. We have been preparing for this since January and it is nice to do a performance for our community, especially for people becoming U.S. citizens.” Katie went on to say, “at Cortland Senior High the music community is a close group of students. We all get along and have fun together. Mr. Wells has a vision and a goal for everyone of the students to accomplish. He does everything he can to make sure every student can reach their full potential.”

The Cortland Dynamic Paws hopes to continue this tradition by performing at future Naturalization Ceremonies and arranging other performance for the Cortland community.
