Mark your calendar for National School Lunch Week October 9 - October 13th! The #NSLW17 theme is
“School Lunch: Recipes for Success,” which was designed to help you tell your school lunch story, including the ‘secret ingredients’ to your success! At Cortland Enlarged City School District we are seeing a large increase of participation in our lunch and breakfast program. At Virgil Elementary School alone, breakfast numbers went from averaging 40 students in 2016-2017 school year to averaging 65 students in 2017. Our “Secret Ingredient” is the Community Eligibility Program which allows students to receive breakfast and lunch for students grades PreK-6. Next year, we will look to expand the program to grades PreK-12.
Wava Bush, Cook Manager at the Cortland Enlarged City School District is excited for National School Lunch Week. “We are offering two of our most popular meals for National School Lunch Week, Brunch for Lunch on October 11 and Tacos on October 12. We have found that these meals have higher participation rates and thought it would be a good idea to offer them during this week.” Mrs. Bush explained that, “Kids seem to be energetic and excited about getting breakfast and lunch this year. We are seeing a lot of students that save their juice pouch and some crackers to consume later. It is really exciting to see we are supporting the students. I am glad that students are getting two meals out of one: a breakfast and a snack.”
