During the last week, a series of head-to-head match-ups between different districts in the Central New York area was conducted, not unlike the March Madness bracket. Cortland was declared the winner in a surprise victory over much larger Cicero North Syracuse (CNS). In earlier, semi-final and quarter-final match-ups against Marcellus and CBA, the Cortland Crazies proved that we have a great fan base and a supportive community. The finals against CNS actually ended up in a tie. Round 2 had to be played, and in this case Cortland triumphed 52% to 48%. The use of social media such as the Cortland Enlarged City School Distrtict Facebook page and @CECSDistrict twitter account help spread the word of the competition to the Cortland community.
The original idea of the "Battle of the Fans" came from the NYSPHSAA Student-Athlete Committee in which Cortland Senior, Kathleen Starr, is a member. The Committee meets four times a year via teleconference since all of the student athletes live in different parts of New York State. Kathleen explained that the “Battle of the Fans” idea was to see which high school had the most sportsmanlike fan section.
