Reflecting on the 2016-2017 School Year

As we wrap up the 2016-17 school year, I am very proud to say that we have made significant academic gains throughout the year. Of the 170 students in the class of 2017 eligible for graduation, 113 of these students graduated from the Cortland Enlarged City School District (CECSD) with college credits from Tompkins Cortland Community College (TC3). The credits were earned through the CollegeNow program, which offers a partnership between Cortland Junior Senior High School (CJSHS) and TC3. Eight of these students graduated with their associate degree from TC3. In the athletic realm, 20 out of 24 teams continue to excel on and off the field and were honored as Section III “Scholar Athlete Teams.”

Our students have represented CECSD well by winning the 2017 NASA Space Settlement Contest and competing in Geographic and Spelling Bees. CJSHS received the Award of Excellence from NYSPHSAA for exemplary display of sportsmanship, ethics and integrity.

The vote for the 2017-18 school budget was supported by a wide margin this year – thank you to our Cortland community for your support. While we have made many great strides over the past year, it is important to note that we are still working to advocate in Albany for Cortland’s fair share. Albany continues to shift the tax burden to the local level and federal support for public education is in question. As a result, with each year the school budget process becomes more and more difficult. Despite these challenges, we will continue to be mindful of our students' needs during the budget process.

We at CECSD are committed to protecting the community's investment in our schools. The Energy Performance Project has helped us do just that and we will continue to utilize this project to its full potential. In addition to this, the CECSD Board of Education has begun studying grade configuration and facility use. The community is encouraged to attend these meetings, which will be held each month until the final report is presented to the BOE in December. For more information, please visit the Facilities Study webpage

I wish you a safe and happy summer vacation and look forward to seeing everyone again in September. I have high expectations for all of the good things to come in the 2017-18 school year.
               -Michael J. Hoose, Superintendent

Congratulations to the Class of 2017!

Everyone plays such an important role in shaping and molding our students as they move through our school system. We at the CJSHS would like to thank everyone in the community for the part they played or play in helping our students. Graduation is both a student and community celebration and took place on Friday, June 23, 2017 at SUNY Cortland PER Ice Arena. Thank you for everything you do!

CECSD Facilities Study Gets Underway

The CECSD is committed to the provision of clean, modern, and safe facilities for our students and our community. To ensure this commitment is upheld, the CECSD Board of Education has engaged the Castallo and Silky firm to conduct a facilities study. The essential question for the facilities study is: "Now and in the future, is there a better way to arrange the grades and school buildings to maintain, and perhaps enhance, the education of CECSD students while ensuring fiscal responsibility to the taxpayer? If so, how should the grades and schools be organized?"

The committee will meet each month until their final report is presented to the Board of Education in December. The records of the committee’s work are kept at the “Facilities Study” webpage, which is located under the “Quicklinks” section of cortlandschools.org.
