Music is an essential developmental element in the education of all children. The study of music affords the student the opportunity for meaningful participation that directly contributes to cognitive, aesthetic, and kinesthetic growth.

INVOLVEMENT is the key to all music experience. Through participation, a learner responds to some aspect of the expressive quality of the music by singing, playing, moving, listening or creating. Music stimulates imagination, creativity, and sensitivity. Music also fosters a sense of community while providing an outlet for self-expression and responses to the expression of others.

MUSIC STUDY is the component linked to involvement for LEARNING to occur. Students explore elements of music such as rhythm, melody, form, harmony, and expressive qualities. Students form concepts through sequenced skill development in listening, performing, and reading music. Thinking tasks include problem solving, analyzing, organizing, defining, and evaluating. Students learn connections to cultural and historical aspects through music study. The study of music is also valued for the motivation and discipline of practice as well as the self-confidence it can offer a child.

Music is an art form of shared human experience. The development of musicianship is the goal of the program as well as the recognition of individual and special needs of children. The aim is to enrich the lives of children - aesthetically, socially, academically, and personally. For those students for whom further study in music is appropriate, the foundation is laid. It is our hope to provide all students with the opportunity to develop resources for life long learning and a rewarding personal life.
