Health Requirements & Electives

Personal Health Grades 11-12 (½Year, ½ Units)

The purpose of this course is to improve student awareness concerning those issues governing our heath; teaching behavior change to for the benefit of personal heath.  This course will motivate students to make healthy life choices using updated coverage on topics relevant to students’ lives.    Students will actively participate in creating, locating and analyzing facts, opinions and strategies that will improve their chances to lead a healthier life.  Topics may include tobacco use, alcohol, nutrition, fitness testing, aging, cancer, and a lifestyle disease evaluation.  This course is accredited through Tompkins Cortland Community College for three (3) hours of college credit.

 

SENIOR HIGH HEALTH 9520 Grade 11-12
( ½ Year, ½ Unit)
Content: This semester course covers all the eleven conceptual areas mandated and/or recommended by the State of New York. It is designed to meet the needs, interests, and abilities of eleventh grade students with the purpose of developing the use of desirable health enhancing knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors as well as critical thinking, problem solving, decision making, resistance and coping skills in health related matters. All units and topics emphasize assuming responsibility for one’s personal, family, school, and community health and developing a wellness lifestyle. Health is viewed as a process, not an end in itself. Rather,
it is a means to an end a happy, healthy, productive, and fulfilling life.

Health Issues 20 weeks ½ units; 1 semester

Current controversial social health issues will be address in this course.  Students will investigate health problems facing society placing emphasis on the development of self-directed responsible living in today’s society. Emphasis is placed on relating social health concepts for individual’s well being in personal, community, vocational and leadership roles. This is a student driven course. The end result of this course is student awareness of specific social health issues.

 

First Aid & Safety Education (TC3 Hlth 205)  grades 11-12

½ year ½ units

Offered 1st and/or 2nd semester

This is a study of the typical injuries, illnesses, and emergency situation received in workplace, recreation, home and community as well as the corresponding first aid skills needed to manage those emergences until Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel arrive.  Students will learn ways to respond to situation effecting the home and community including emergency and disaster response. This course emphasizes ways to prevent such scenarios and helps students confront their fears of stepping forward to provide assistance. The corresponding American Red Cross certificates are presented upon satisfactory completion of requirements of Adult, Child, and Infant CPR; First Aid; Adult and Child AED (Automated External Defibrillation)

 

Peer Education Program:  SEX, DRUGS, AND ROCK-N-ROLL

Grades 10, 11, 12 (1 Year, 1 Unit)

Prerequisite: Application/Approval of Course Instructor

Content: In this prevention course, the goal is to build attitudes and skills which will reduce the risk of pregnancy, STD’s/HIV, and the abuse of alcohol and other drugs.  High school students will receive instruction and training on how to work with 7th and 8th grade health students to promote abstinence from risky behaviors.  Peer educators will explore the many factors which influence ideas, attitudes and behavior about sex and drugs.  Accurate information will be presented persuasively.  Opportunities will be provided to practice communication, resistance, and refusal skills.  Students will learn to make healthy and responsible decisions about drugs and sex in today’s world.  Students then will take a leadership role in teaching to others.

 

Parenting & Successful Relationships Grades 10, 11, 12

(10 weeks/1/4 Year, 1/4 Unit)

Offered 1st and/or 2nd semester

 

PSR is designed to help teens develop the skills and gain the knowledge that will help them become better partners in relationships and future parents. Students will learn the responsibilities of parenting, how good management and interpersonal skills are relevant to maintaining healthy relationships and parenting children.

Home and Career Skills supports every academic area through real life experiences.  It prepares students to participate in the rapidly changing and increasingly complex work.  While learning content students will be encouraged to practice c9operateration, leadership and good citizenship skills.

Content includes decision making and goal setting; character education; personal hygiene and clothing maintenance; working with children; food nutritional and wellness; and family and friend relationships.

Parenting & Successful Relationships Grades 10, 11, 12

CHILD DEVELOPMENT

Grades 10-12   ( ½ Year, ½ Unit)

Content: Students will explore how to help children, infant through school-age, establish optimal physical, emotional, social, and intellectual foundations.  In this course, students will have the opportunity to interact with children, visit day care facilities in the community, and discover the responsibilities associated with children through the Flour Baby Project and "Baby Think It Over."                                                            

FOOD PREPARATION & NUTRITION

Grades 9-12   ( ½  Year, ½ Unit)

Content: Understanding good nutrition and proper food preparation is important for all students, male and female.  Being able to select a healthy diet and prepare food to preserve nutrients and avoid contamination is a basic requirement for healthy living.   Students will participate in food labs, experiments, and demonstrations to explore the various aspects of food preparation.  Content includes nutrition awareness, meal management, food purchasing and preparation, meal service, and related career exploration.

 

EXPLORATORY FOODS

Grades 9-12   ( ½ Year,  ½ Unit)

Content: This course will cover basic food preparation skills, reinforce concepts of a healthy diet and preparation of nutritious food products.  Special diets will be explored and skills in gourmet and international cuisine will be developed as students express interest in various meal patterns.
