    SCHOLARSHIPS AND DONATIONS

A Message from the Scholarship Chair (Linda Contento Schmidt, '72)

We hope that your experience as a student at Cortland High School was one that will inspire you to contribute towards a positive experience for our current students.  In addition to donating towards existing scholarships, you may wish to create a new scholarship or consider a gift to Cortland High School. The possibilities are endless and you are certain to find a method of giving that is meaningful to you or to your class.  Contributions are tax-deductible!

Existing CHSAA-Initiated Scholarships to Which You May Contribute

    • CHSAA Scholarship: This scholarship is presented to a senior who plans to attend a two-year or four-year college in the fall. The student must be in good academic standing, be a positive role model to fellow students, and demonstrate strong leadership qualities and school spirit. Preference is given to a student representative of CHSAA. If you would like to contribute to this scholarship fund, please send your check or money order (payable to CHSAA) to CHSAA Treasurer, 8 Valley View Drive, Cortland, NY, 13045.

    • James Caddell Memorial Scholarship: This newly established scholarship serves to honor the memory of James Caddell ('91), by selecting a graduating senior for exceptional efforts in communication such as the video club and/or the school newspaper, the Tiger's Paw. If you would like to contribute to this scholarship fund, please send your check or money order (payable to CHSAA) to CHSAA Treasurer, 8 Valley View Drive, Cortland, NY, 13045.

    • Josephine E. Contento '37 Memorial Award: This award is given to a student who best exemplifies the personal qualities of "Jo" Contento: kindness and compassion for others, generosity, integrity, interest in sports and/or music, sense of humor, personality, well-liked by all, with a preference for those demonstrating need for financial help for continuing education. If you would like to contribute to this scholarship fund, please send your check or money order (payable to CHS-Jo Contento Scholarship) to Debbie Sinsabaugh, 8 Valley View Drive, Cortland, NY, 13045.

    • Tom Clark Scholarship: Presented to a graduating senior of the Cortland Alternative High School; a student who dropped out of the main stream of regular high school, for whatever reason, but continued on and graduated.  Tom Clark was a high school dropout.  He had the good fortune to later continue his education and became a teacher.  He taught science for 29 years in the Cortland School District.  A student of his, Dr. Greg Laurell, generously set up this scholarship.  An award of $500 is presented to encourage a Cortland Alternative graduate to continue personal and educational development for their future. If you would like to contribute to this scholarship fund, please send your check or money order (payable to CHS-Tom Clark Scholarship) to Debbie Sinsabaugh, 8 Valley View Drive, Cortland, NY, 13045.

    • The Patsy Cosimo Music Award: This award was presented for the first time at graduation on June 22, 2007. Pat Cosimo was a talented and dedicated musician who was well known in Cortland for his performances and the guitar and banjo lessons he gave. Pat was also famous throughout the United States when he traveled with his brothers Phil and Sam as the Cosimo Brothers trio. Pat lived for his music and music was his life. This newly established scholarship honors Pat's memory with a scholarship going to a graduating senior who possesses a love of music and a strong desire to continue their education in music. If you wish to contribute towards this scholarship fund, please send your check or money order (payable to CHSAA) to CHSAA Treasurer, 8 Valley View Drive, Cortland, NY, 13045.

    Establish a New Scholarship

If none of the existing scholarships appeal to you, perhaps you or your class would prefer to establish a new scholarship. People often choose to honor the memory of a deceased classmate or relative who graduated from CHS. In some cases, classes choose to create a "Class of..." scholarship that can be either a one-time or a continuing award. The possibilities are unlimited. If you are interested in any of these options, please contact Linda Schmidt at lms10@cornell.edu or at contento@twcny.rr.com or call 607-756-8345 after 5pm EST. She will assist you in working through the details and will coordinate with CHS as needed.
