MINI-PROJECTS

 

This series of mini-projects is meant to be done as the semester progresses and takes the place of the research paper. It will be due on the same day that the research papers are due. Whereas those doing research papers will speak about their topics, you will be required to speak about one research mini-project and/or observation that you completed, and read one paper that you wrote.

Format: The format for submitting this project follows specific guidelines provided on this format page.

In total, you will complete ten projects.  Choose any ten from the list below.

2008

1 Write a 2-4 page biographical paper about Sigmund Freud, Alfred Adler, or Carl Jung. Cite your sources.
2 Read the article “Take Command of the Room with Strong Body Language.”  Write a summary of the article, and include some pictures or other information about this topic from the Internet.
3 Read the article at http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2001/02/010219080616.htm titled “Brain reprograms itself after stroke” and respond to it. In addition, search the internet for a cite that has a similar article: read the article and include the article address in your response.
4 Read the article “The Dangers and Safety Precautions Related to the Olfactory Dysfunction Anosmia” at http://hubel.sfasu.edu/courseinfo/SL99/anosmia.html and review it.
5 Create a project that explores advertising and media attempts to appeal to your motivations. Use the six motivators from Chapter 5 discussion. Your project might include analyzing a number of commercials, explaining them, and assessing their attempts at motivating you. OR, you might examine a magazine, or a series of magazines, and analyze the advertisements therein. Your analysis should be a typed 1-2 page report on the use of survival and non-survival motivators in advertising. Have fun.
6 Complete one of the Child Observation projects. See link for details.
7 Read an article in “SIRS Enduring Issues: Health” (Ref. 050 SIR) from the Mental Health section. Write a 1 ½ page summative response. Click here for format.
8 Read the article “Fear of Snakes, Spiders Rooted in Evolution, Study Finds” at http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2001/10/1004_snakefears.html . Describe that article, read Watson’s study on pages 194-196 in your text. Is fear a basic instinct, or is it a conditioned response, or is it both?

Read the article “HYPNOSIS MAY GIVE FALSE CONFIDENCE IN INACCURATE MEMORIES” at http://researchnews.osu.edu/archive/hypnomem.htm

and review it.

10 Read "Tactile Contact and Evaluation of the Toucher" and write a review of it. Do you believe it?
11 Read an article from Psychology Today concerning gender or personality and write a 1 ½ summative response to it.

13 Read “ETHNOCENTRISM: What is it? Why are people ethnocentric? What is the problem? What can we do about it?” at http://www.iupui.edu/~anthkb/ethnocen.htm and write a review about it.
14 Watch “A Beautiful Mind.” Research the story (read at least one article about it) and write about it. Be sure to include the bibliographical information for the article that you read.
15 Make a brochure/pamphlet about a Mental Disorder. Use http://www.kamsc.org.au/hpu_resources_2.html for some good examples.
16 Read "See No Evil: The Neurological Defense Would Blame Violence on the Damaged Brain" and write a review of it.
17 Read the article titled "The Online Disinhibition Effect" at http://www-usr.rider.edu/~suler/psycyber/disinhibit.html and review it.
18 Read the article “Cults: Public Perception vs. Research” at http://www.rickross.com/reference/general/general431.html and review it.
19 Read the article “What’s in your Mind,” and write a 1 ½ page summative response about the article. The article is in National Geographic, March 2005 and can be found in the library.
20 Read the article "Psychophysiological Aspects of Nightmares, Night Terrors, and Sleepwalking" and write a review of it.
