James Caddell Scholarship

Deadline:  5/16/2008

Many people climb their entire lives to reach their dreams.  Many people don't even try.

Cortland High School alum James Caddell, Class of '91, not only had dreams, he fulfilled many of

them by the time he was 32 years old.  He graduated from McGill University, Montreal, with a BA in History

and had an MA from Royal Military College, Kingston, Ont.  He served in the Armored Division, Royal Canadian

Hussars and was a United Nations Peacekeeper in Bosnia in '95.

He married Tara Newell, of London, Ont. in 2002 and although he never got the chance to have children of his own,

he was beloved by children all over the world when he and his wife set off on a round-the-world trip in 2004. They

carefully saved their money from their jobs for several years in order to travel.  After the 2005 tsunami in Asia,

he and Tara did whatever they could to help the survivors and then went on to rebuild an orphanage in Southern

India.  They climbed to a base camp on Mount Everest.  They went to the bottom of South America to see the

glaciers of Patagonia.  They watched the coronation of the King of Cambodia.  They learned to speak Spanish

in Argentina.  On Oct. 16, 2005, James died tragically of high altitude pulmonary edema (altitude sickness)

while traveling in Bolivia, on the final leg of a six continent journey.

While James was at CHS, he was tirelessly involved in the Cortland Video Club and was a

contributer to the Tiger's Paw.  The scholarship in his name honors his memory by recognizing

a CHS senior who shares his passion for communciation.  During his travels, our brother always

signed off on his E:mails with this quote from Mark Twain:  Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry

and narrow-mindedness and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts.

Broad, wholesome, charitable views of people and things cannot be acquired by

vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime."
